UK - TRADE UNIONS

What the Data Shows (Trade Union Members in the UK)

Type of experience

What the data suggests (among trade-union or union-member workers)

Male / Female Split

Sexual harassment (at work)

TUC polling shows very high levels: more than half of women report some form of sexual harassment in their workplace.
In an ICTU survey among union members: 54% reported jokes of a sexual nature; 44% reported unwanted verbal advances; 43% “unwelcome comments about body/clothes”; 38% unwanted touching.
Unite survey (2025) across its sectors: 56% had sexually offensive jokes; 55% unwanted flirting/remarks; 43% inappropriate touching; 28% shown pornographic images by a colleague or third party.

According to TUC evidence, 57% of union members are women. UK Parliament Committee1
In the ICTU survey, 73% of the survey respondents were women
The harassment reported in TUC data is “more likely” among women; younger women, disabled women, LGBT+ etc are especially at risk.

Sexual assault / coercion (at work)

Unite’s recent (2025) survey: 25% of women members said they had been sexually assaulted at work; 8% said they had been a victim of sexual coercion (i.e., pressured, manipulated for sex) in the workplace.
In construction (a sub-sector of Unite): 31% of female construction workers said they had experienced work-related sexual assault. Unite News

This data is almost entirely from women: Unite’s survey is of its women members. Health & Safety Matters+1
There is very little published quantitative data on male trade union members experiencing sexual assault in these union-led surveys.

Rape

We found no reliable, recent public survey from UK trade unions that reports a percentage of union members raped at work.
The ICTU survey reports “seriously sexually assaulted or rape” by 2% of respondents.

In the ICTU survey, while 2% reported “seriously sexually assaulted or rape,” the survey is majority female respondents (73% women), so this 2% is not clearly split by sex in publicly reported summary data.

Stalking

We found no trade-union-member-specific survey data for stalking at work (UK) in the publicly available union reports.
The British Safety Council (citing broader data) notes that “4% of all callers to the National Stalking Helpline … were stalked by a colleague or former colleague.” British Safety Council

Not broken out by male vs female in the union-member context in available reports.

Domestic violence / abuse

UNISON explicitly recognizes domestic abuse as a “trade union and workplace issue.”
According to UNISON’s motion, “1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men” report having experienced domestic abuse at some point in their lives. UNISON National

UNISON also notes that many people experiencing domestic abuse are stalked or abused in the workplace: 47% of employees reporting abuse state that they have been stalked or abused in the workplace.” UNISON National

Based on UNISON’s data: 33% of women, 16.7% of men have experienced domestic abuse at some p
